Music Ministry:
The document on the liturgy from the Second Vatican Council states: "The musical tradition of the universal Church ..., as a combination of sacred music and words, forms a necessary or integral part of the solemn liturgy." Anyone who enjoys leading the assembly in praising God with the gift of song or music is welcome and encouraged to share their talents with our parish. There are two ways in which you are invited to do so.
Song Leader/ Accompanist:
Like other ministries, the ministries of the song leader and accompanist are unique. They require special gifts and a sense of commitment. These ministries are liturgical and pastoral, as well as musical. The cantor, together with the accompanist, is a leader of prayer, who engages the congregation in sung prayer. They are servants enabling the assembly to express in the liturgy its own prayer in song.
Generally you will be scheduled for one or two Eucharistic liturgies each weekend that you are available, as well as for Holy Days of Obligation and other special liturgical celebrations. If you are of high school age or older and interested in either of these ministries, please call the Parish Office.
Adult Choir:
Adult choir rehearsals are Wednesday evenings at 7:30 p.m. The choir sings at the 10:30 a.m. Sunday Mass two times per month and for special feasts. The adult choir leads the assembly in sung prayer, as well as assisting the assembly in worship through the singing of multi-part choral anthems. All voices (sopranos, altos, tenors, and basses) are needed and welcome any time of the year. For more information, please call the Parish Office.
Dear St. Cecilia,
We seek your prayers for liturgical music that is beautiful, holy, and universal.
Amen.
Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion:
EMHC are laypeople appointed by the bishop to distribute Holy Communion at Mass, to the homebound, or to those in the hospital or nursing homes. They are called "extraordinary" because the ordinary ministers of Holy Communion are the ordained clergy. EMHC are to be fully initiated, practicing Catholics in good standing with the Church, at least age 18. Training is most important because we are handling the Sacred Body and Blood of our Lord. Training is in the fall of each year or as needed on an individual basis.
For more information please call the Parish Office.
Mass Coordinator:
Mass Coordinators are Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion who coordinate set-up for Mass. Duties include: setting up the credence table, preparing the offertory gifts, readying the Lectionary and Sacramentary, and assisting the altar servers with their preparations. MCs are scheduled approximately once per month at their preferred Mass time. Training is in the fall of the year or as needed individually, and an instructional booklet is provided.
For more information please call the Parish Office.
Proclaimer:
Proclaimers (Lectors) make Christ present at the Mass by proclaiming the Word of God in the First and Second Readings of the Mass and propose the intentions for the Prayers of the Faithful. If you have good speaking abilities and a love of Scripture, become a Proclaimer for St. Michael’s. A training workshop is provided in the fall of each year, or as needed individually.
For more information please call the Parish Office.
Hospitality (Greeter/ Usher):
This ministry consists of men and women who serve as both greeter and usher at St. Michael’s, offering a pleasant "Good morning" or "welcome" in the name of Christ and a smile to all who gather to celebrate the liturgy. Duties include taking up the collection, handing out bulletins, helping people find seating, and recruiting a family to bring up the bread and wine. Training is done each fall, or on an individual basis whenever new ministers of hospitality come forward.
For more information please call the Parish Office.
Altar Server:
The special job of altar server is to help the priest, in the form of carrying the cross in procession, being a candle bearer, book server, and assisting the priest at the altar. This ministry is open to all 4th graders and older on Sundays, Holy Days of Obligation, Weddings, and Funerals. Training is provided in the fall of the year.
